A Complete Guide to Used Outdoor Gear Stores in the U.S.

Used gear is the best gear!

It’s better for the environment (as well as for you wallet!)

I have a pretty long history with outdoor gear thrift and consignment stores.  I used to work in one (see Alaska’s The Hoarding Marmot below). I worked at the Marmot (as we all fondly called it) for two years while living in Alaska.  It’s the longest job I’ve ever kept and that should say something.

Aside from the fact that the Marmot became like family, it helped cultivate a deep love for pre-loved clothing and the idea of gear recycling.  I loved the idea that everything had a story AND wasn’t drawing precious resources to create new things we already have enough of. Pretty soon, I minimized my wardrobe and filled it with carefully selected pieces from the Marmot, all of which I love and cherish.

Taking the lessons I learned while working there when I moved into the van, I challenged myself to #NeverBuyNew.  With a few exceptions (like underwear and shoes), I do not buy new clothes. I find them used instead, whether it be in thrift stores, thrifting apps like Poshmark, used outdoor gear websites (like Patagonia Worn Wear and REI Used Gear), and of course, outdoor specific thrift stores.

Unfortunately, they are not actually that many places relatively speaking at least) cashing in on this wonderful market niche. Those that do exist can sometimes we hard to track down. I often find myself asking of a location, where to buy used outdoor gear? Google pretty much autofills second hand store near me outdoor gear the second I type an “S”.

I decided to finally tackle the problem and create a resource not just for myself but for others: the first of its kind as I am incredibly thrilled to say.  This list contains all of the used outdoor gear thrift and consignment stores in the U.S. as of early 2020. In the navigation menu below, click on the state you live in and it’ll take you down the page right to all the stores there.  I was stoked to see all but two states had at least one used gear store.

While I’m pretty proud of how complete this list is, the research for this was a beast.  I’m sure I missed a few here and there. If you know of any used gear retailers that I missed, please let me know and I’ll happily add them to the list.

Let’s all make the 2020s the decade we start reusing what we have before buying things that don’t need to exist!  Where or not you want to go as extreme as me and #NeverBuyNew or just want a rad retro Patagonia Snap-T from the 90s, this list can help you find amazing things that deserve to be given a second chance at life.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT OUTDOOR GEAR CONSIGNMENT

One quick note before the list: You’ll notice I define for each store how these stores get their used gear.  Most of the time, it comes from folks like you looking to trade their old stuff in for a little cash to buy something new (or old). There are two main methods these stores pay clients for gear:

  • Outright: The store buys an item directly from you, paying you with either cash, a check, or store credit right then and there.

  • Consignment: This means you don’t get money up front.  You get money once the item sells, at which point you’ll receive a percentage of what it sells for (defined up front by your contract).

There are pros and cons to both.  Outright payment has the advantage that you don’t need to wait for the item to sell to receive compensation for it. However, you generally receive a lower percentage of the expected sale price (around 30%) that if you consign (where you receive upwards of 50% of the sale price).

Before You Drive Away…

For all those of you who have a passion for pre-loved, who have ever found yourself pondering, “Where to buy used backpacking gear…”, and who prefer your ski gear second hand and sustainable… we hope this list has helped!

We’re pretty stoked on it, and not just because it’s better for the planet. It’s also better for the economy because most of these are small businesses that need the support of the outdoor community. REI Garage prices may be tempting, but they’re still a big brand. #SupportSmall
